But before I left that city I was to have an experience that is so important to me, probably one of the most important experiences on the Path. It taught me the nature of my own subjective awareness and how erroneous that subjective awareness can be, the conclusions we reach—in politics and in religion, and in all kinds of our views of life. We have them from childhood. We’re indoctrinated. And this particular prejudice that was very intense, a bigotry I might say, had been there from childhood. And here I was. I’d gone all through college—had some wonderful teachers and done a lot of logic and algebra and geometry and understanding—and certainly I thought I was a free mind.
But I wasn’t a free mind at all, and I did not have the ability to see through my own subjective awareness. And I believe that that is the key trap of the modern age—that when we hear something new, the force of our former belief is so intense that if we are going to change to what we hear, it demands such a cataclysm, such an admission that we have been wrong, it’s such an assault to our spiritual and intellectual pride, that because we’ve always believed it, it is more real than what we now have to see as the reality. I consider this one of the major initiations on the path of real freedom and real illumination.
Well, the prejudice that I had was a prejudice concerning the Virgin Mary. I was basically in a Protestant community, although I had always had much comfort in going into Catholic churches. And when I was in Europe, I had gone all over into the Catholic cathedrals. And so, I realized that there was a real hostility, an intense dislike.
I believed, as I had been taught, that Catholics worshiped idols, that she was some sort of a goddess that allowed herself to be called the Queen of the Universe, among other things. She was portrayed in the public subway—a deliberate and, I thought, an offense to those who were not Catholic. How dare she call herself the Queen of the Universe and allow herself to be worshiped as the Mother of God! So that was my indoctrination, and I had not yet seen through it.
So I was walking down the street, lighthearted in the sense that I had found what I’d been seeking for. And all of a sudden I looked up, and there she was! This is a painting of her, although she didn’t quite look this way. It’s one of my favorite paintings of her, although it looks very orthodox. It has that sense of a fiery heart, an impassioned heart of love, the floral offering upon the sons and daughters of God, and the piercing of the heart with the sword, of the pain of the perpetual crucifixion of God’s children in war, on the battlefield, in their trials, in their temptations. Truly it is the face and the picture of a mother’s heart.
When I looked up at her she looked as a young maiden. She looked like a young girl one would see in this century. In fact, I identified her as a friend I had known forever and a sister of light. In the presence of this intense love that was radiating to me I was naked. My own hostility and my own hatred hung there like rags of my own subconscious mind.
I ran to the nearest Catholic church. I knelt before her statue. I said, “Forgive me. Forgive me. Let me be your hands and your heart and your temple. Let me go out and find your children and let me bring comfort to life.”
Since that hour, I have known Mother Mary to be a sister, a guardian of the race. I have seen her as the archetypal woman, as a great scientist of the Piscean age, not a mere peasant who had no understanding of the process of giving birth to the cosmic consciousness in the firstborn son. I have seen her in this age as a means, as an opening to the realization of God as Mother. She has shown me the science of the raising of the Mother flame in all of us as the raising of the Kundalini from the base to the crown.
She has taught me that the Hail Mary that has been said for almost fifteen hundred years by Western Christianity is really a “Hail Ma-ray.” Mary is simply a shortened abbreviation for Ma-ray, or the Mother ray of the universe, or the negative polarity, or feminine principle of being. And she has explained this “Hail Mother ray” as a salutation to the white-fire core, the seed atom of the base of the spine, which Hindus call the Goddess Kundalini. She has said that saints and mystics for centuries have been saying the Hail Mary as a means for the raising of that energy.
It’s indeed a part of Western tradition and this is why the saints have been portrayed with a white light upon their heads, because they have opened their crown chakras. They have entered into the bliss of God. They have written down—the great mystics of the Western Church—their experiences with this beloved God and their souls’ coming and going in and out of that presence. And we know that the great lights, such as Saint John of the Cross and Thérèse of Lisieux and Padre Pio, and those who’ve come and gone and written their experiences, and those who have not, have all had this inner experience so passionate with the energy and bliss of God as to even defy an understanding by those who observe and think they are but martyrs.
Well, she explained to me then that the term Mother of God is not a title exclusive to her. She says, “I am a wayshower. I have realized the fullness of this Mother flame within me. As I have done, men and women must do.” She said, “To be the Mother of God is to nourish life on earth in embodiment. To nourish the flame, to nourish the eternal Christos that is born in every heart, caring for one another is coming to understand God as Mother.”
And she said, “The only reason that I become the object of the Hail Mary is that I become a person behind which the principle, the eternal principle of the Omega, or the feminine being, is discovered.” She said there are many other feminine beings who have ascended and risen to those planes of God consciousness who participate in assisting men and women in realizing their inner aspiration.
So I have learned a great deal from her including the science of cosmic astrology, a cosmic clock. She has taught me the cycles of plotting the chart of our daily karma and our dharma as this works out on the twelve points of a cosmic clock, which she shows me are the twelve stars of the crown of the Woman in the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation. This science I have in our book on the Great White Brotherhood.*
It’s a most fascinating understanding because it teaches us to know each day what we will face. It’s not an outer world astrology; it’s an inner attunement with the coil of being and how that coil unfolds. It has given many people the edge of understanding that has enabled them to come to grips with their own psychology and the emotions we deal with from day to day—why we feel different on one day and why we feel different on another. It has to do with the amount of karma that we’re dealing with. What we’ve sown in past lives is energy that returns to us.
So I’ve become a great student of this Mother ray and this Mother energy and I’ve identified with it so much that some people have called me Mother. It’s a simple title, like you’d call a Catholic priest Father or the head of a convent Mother Superior. It doesn’t mean anything more than that. It doesn’t mean anything particularly exalted except that is the path of my devotion.
And the devotion to the Mother is the understanding that in the Aquarian age, when we raise up this Mother energy, then we have the quickening and the understanding of who is this God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Because it’s Mother that explains to us the law of the Father, who we are as sons and daughters, and what is this fabulous energy of love that is the Holy Spirit flowing through us, which when we can control it, we will hold the secrets far more vast than even the splitting of the physical atom.
